Dr Alena Gadoury describes her career as "squiggly" and I love it! Like many of us, over the years she has experienced a number of ups and downs, and her career has headed off in a number of very different directions. Which is precisely what is so amazing about our veterinary professional "passports".
Canadian native Dr Alena, actually started her career as a human paediatric nurse (so yes, she is basically an angel) before moving in to the mental health space. But after a time, the desire for adventure (and a veterinary degree) became too strong to ignore, and Alena made the bold move down under, to Sydney, Australia.
Many people would liken paediatrics to veterinary medicine as for the most part, both professions deal with patients that are unable to advocate for themselves. So it would seem that Alena's previous experiences would prepare her very well for a career in veterinary medicine. Which they absolutely did. After a number of years in clinical practice however, burnout reared it's ugly head, necessitating some major decision-making and a significant change in direction.
In this episode, Alena talks openly about her journey of self-discovery; and how having a strong sense of self and defining her core values have helped her find the veterinary job that perfectly suits her. That aligns with her values, supports who she is an individual, and provides her joy and satisfaction every single day.
